Mentor
In February we launched our new Aspiring Professionals Programme (APP). Students accepted onto the APP will receive a variety of interconnected supports including:
· Mentoring
· Internships
· Workshops on higher education
· Careers advice
The aim of the mentoring programme is to provide SMF students with an individual who can act as a resource, sounding board and role model. Through the mentoring programme, students can begin to fully understand life in the sector they are interested in and employers and individuals can help the next generation of talented students enhance the skills that their industry needs for the future.
In 2011, the mentoring will be a structured programme with training and regular bulletins to ensure that as Mentors, you can help the SMF’s bright, talented students achieve their full potential.
The mentoring is predominantly online, with optional meet-ups throughout the year.
Volunteering for the APP offers a unique opportunity to make a difference to the life of a less privileged young person, whilst contributing to your own professional development.
We offer:
• The chance to make a real impact on the confidence, aspiration and achievement of your Mentee, by dedicating just 15-30 minutes per week of your time
• A designated, secure mentoring website
• Monthly e-bulletins, with suggested discussion topics and activities
• An easy mentoring system where you can respond directly from your own email account without personal information being shared
• Flexibility – our mentoring website can be accessed anywhere, any time
What we ask of professionals:
• Over a one year period, commit to mentoring a high-achieving 16-17 year old, who is interested in your career sector
• Dedicate 15-30 minutes per week of your time to log on and post a message
• Have a willingness to share your experiences of studying, university life and your career
• Undertake a free Criminal Records Bureau disclosure – a quick and easy process, for which we can come to your office
Please be aware that we have interest from a range of prospective Mentors and, although we are looking for volunteers, the numbers of high achieving students from low-income backgrounds differs year-on-year, as does our response from potential Mentors. We cannot guarantee that we able to use the goodwill of all potential Mentors.
