536 Personal Statements, from Northern Ireland to the Isle of Wight!

Sally for November blog

As competition to enter the top universities increases, a strong personal statement is crucial. A personal statement sets out why a student is suited to their chosen university course and what they offer as a candidate. It is often the only chance students have to “sell” themselves and can determine whether universities offer a student an interview, or even a place.

Many SMF students will be in the first generation in their family to attend university and their families may not feel confident supporting their university applications. The SMF offers students the chance for their personal statements to be checked by an academic expert in their chosen subject or a professional in their career sector. For many of our students the checkers are the only people outside of their school to offer this bespoke advice.

This year, 536 students submitted their personal statements (an 18% increase from last year). 247 volunteers checked statements across more than 60 different university courses. Online support from checkers helped us to reach students from all across the UK, including Northern Ireland, Wales, Newcastle, Hull, Exeter, and the Isle of Wight, as well as our target cities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester.

Here is what some of our 2015 students said about the service:

I found the service very useful! The expertise of a professional in a field similar to the course I’m applying for really propelled my personal statement and helped me take it in the right direction. I’d say the feedback I received was pivotal.” –Patric (London, Media & Communications student)

“Thank you very much for all of your help and feedback. I am very pleased with my personal statement and feel that all of the guidance I have received has made it a lot stronger”. –Emma (Liverpool, Medicine student)

“I found the personal statement service really useful as my major problem was cutting down characters and my helper really helped me to make it concise”. –Mohamed (London, Banking & Finance student)

We would like to say a big thank you to all of the volunteers – we simply would not be able to offer the online checking service without their support. We wish our aspirational 2015 students good luck with their university applications!
