Sasha’s experience of the Aspiring Professionals Programme

Applying for the Social Mobility Foundation’s Aspiring Professionals Programme is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The events that I’ve attended this year have developed my confidence and given me the opportunity to meet so many other young people like myself.

Before joining the programme I was extremely shy and I was reluctant to leave my comfort zone. After only one or two sessions run by the SMF that addressed networking and introductions, I felt far more comfortable in social situations. In the summer I felt confident enough to attend two university summer schools, which is something I would never have done had I not developed my interpersonal skills.

I gained a lot from attending the SMF’s Oxbridge workshop. The SMF invited students and staff from both universities and I could ask questions about my personal statement, their admissions tests and the interviews. After attending the event, I felt reassured in applying to Cambridge.

A great strength about the Aspiring Professionals Programme is its links with highly respected businesses and individuals. You are assigned to a mentor who works in the field you wish to go into. For those who don’t normally have these connections, this is so helpful.

Overall, being part of the SMF has not only taught me specific skills, but it has enabled me to grow as a person and to look forward to situations involving professionals and new people. The experience I have gained on the programme has been invaluable.
