A look back at a busy Easter period for SMF students!

This Easter the SMF, with generous support from a number of employers and universities, held 27 events across seven cities. Overall, 751 students took part, with many making the most of SMF opportunities, and attending more than one event! We hosted university visits spanning the length of the country, from Bristol to St Andrews and Liverpool to Nottingham, as well as skills sessions and futures days that helped students to gain skills, confidence and start making lasting friendships too.

Our Making an Impression workshop encouraged students to think about how they can make the best impression, and communicate in an appropriate, professional manner. Topics spanned personal branding (with some inspiration from Beyoncé!), writing a professional and engaging email, and navigating tricky networking situations.

“The sessions helped me to gain confidence and introduce myself to new people and make conversation.”

Students asked insightful questions of our guest speakers, who discussed some key elements of making the right first and lasting impression during an interview.

“It really helped my understanding of how to interact throughout a whole interview experience; before, during and after.”

SMF Futures Days offer students an insight into their chosen career sector and give them an opportunity to think about the opportunities available to them after sixth form.

Aspiring lawyers in our London cohort enjoyed meeting a range of professionals during a career carousel at Clifford Chance, whilst future accountancy and finance students in Manchester delivered fantastic presentations during their business challenge at KPMG. In the North East, students from our STEM sectors had a fantastic day exploring Aesica’s plants and laboratories.

Futures Days offer a great introduction to the variety of roles and careers SMF students may wish to consider, and they’re a great opportunity to get a real picture of what a day-to-day jobs in different industries can look like. We extend our thanks to all of the firms and professionals who helped us to make these days possible.

“Having had this opportunity to hear about experiences of others, I realised I am just as capable as they are and feel more confident about my choices”

In the coming months, students will begin making big decisions about the universities and courses they will apply to. Our University Visits are a chance for students to see different cities and universities, and help them weigh up their priorities.

During the Easter holidays, and with the help of university staff and student ambassadors, SMF students were able to discover more about what university life looks like. Among others, students had the opportunity to visit campus universities like York and Nottingham, and to explore city universities like Birmingham and Manchester.

From seeing lecture theatres and receiving taster lectures, to campus tours and hearing first-hand from students, university visits are crucial in helping to inform SMF students’ decisions about where to apply.

“I learned more than I could imagine in the time space of a day”, and another saying that “The university visit has helped me reflect on my university choices and it gave me a deeper insight of the university life.”

On behalf of the SMF and our students, we send our thanks to the hosts and ambassadors who made each of these visits so insightful and successful!

We are looking forward to seeing the students again at our May half term and summer events when we’ll continue to build on the skills, experience and knowledge of our talented Aspiring Professionals!
