Alan Milburn becomes Chair of the SMF as Employer Index launches

Rt Hon Alan Milburn becomes Chair of the Social Mobility Foundation & urges employers to enter the Social Mobility Employer Index

We are delighted to announce that Alan Milburn has become Chair of the Social Mobility Foundation. Our announcement is made on the day that the SMF has opened the 2019 Social Mobility Employer Index for submissions.

The former Cabinet Minister and former Chair of the Social Mobility Commission takes over the position from Sir Nick Clegg.

Commenting on becoming Chair, Alan said:

“I’m honoured to become chair of the SMF. By providing innovative opportunities for thousands of young people the SMF has been leading the way to create a fairer more mobile country. Its work is needed now more than ever.  I would like to thank Nick Clegg for all his work and support for the Foundation during his time as chair. I hope to help the organisation extend its reach still further.”

“Employers have a critical role in breaking down the barriers that prevent too many young people realise their potential.  The Social Mobility Employers Index gives the public an insight into which organisations are working most effectively to do so.  With more employers pinning their colours to the social mobility mast it would be good to see a record number of them entering the index this year.”

Outgoing Chair Sir Nick Clegg commented:

“I am delighted that Alan Milburn has agreed to Chair the SMF. It is difficult to think of anyone with better credentials, greater expertise or personal commitment to the cause of social mobility in Britain. I know that with Alan as Chair the SMF will grow from strength to strength, and that thousands of young people across the nation will benefit from his wisdom and leadership in the years ahead.”
