Overview: If you enjoy biology or chemistry you might be interested in the exciting options a career in science can give you. The work of scientists varies greatly, from finding ways to preserve our environment to extending life expectancies through medical research. If you’re interested in becoming a vet, dentist, or midwife, unfortunately we do not have a tailored programme for these careers.

Skills Required: All kinds of scientists will need to be academically strong with an analytical mind, and enjoy problem-solving and data handling. Often working independently, it is important to be able to pay attention to detail in long-term projects, as well as being a team player with good communication skills.

University and Beyond:  There are a wide range of science degrees related to biology and chemistry that you can choose from, such as environmental science, bioscience, biochemistry, pharmacy and neuroscience. For further information about careers in this sector, you can visit Future Morph.

How the SMF can help: The Social Mobility Foundation has worked with leading research and development organisations, research laboratories, museums, energy and petrochemical companies and multi-national pharmaceutical companies to provide internships and mentors. These include EDF Energy, GlaxoSmithKline, the Medical Research Council, University College London and the Natural History Museum.
