Overview

APP Reach supports motivated, ambitious students with the ability but without the network or means to access competitive universities and top professions. We offer support across three pillars:

  1. Mentoring by a professional via email
  2. Online resources to develop skills and career knowledge
  3. University application support and guidance

We offer support to young people interested in:

Accountancy | Architecture | Banking & Finance | Biology & Chemistry | Business | Digital | Engineering & Physics | Law | Media & Communications | Medicine | Politics | No Preference

Who can apply?

APP Reach is open to young people across the UK (outside London) who meet the background but not academic criteria we require for APP City and APP Residential.

Young people who don’t live in an APP City but are interested in a sector not covered by APP Residential are also prioritised for APP Reach based on our employer support, their location and their personal circumstances. Applicants who are unsuccessful in their application to APP Residential may also be offered a place on APP Reach.

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • In Year 12/S5 (Year 13 in Northern Ireland)
  • Achieved at least 5 GCSEs at 9-4 (A*-C) or 5 A-C at National 5
  • Predicted BBC at A Level or BBCC at Higher
  • Eligible or has been eligible for Free Schools Meals at any point in secondary education, or the first generation of their family to be going to university

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions page or get in touch at app@socialmobility.org.uk if you have any more questions.

Why?

In 2016, the UK Government’s Social Mobility Commission published a Social Mobility Index of England, setting out the differences between where children grow up and the chances they have of doing well in adult life. It found that the opportunities young people from poorer backgrounds have to succeed is heavily dependent on where they live. The report identified ‘hot spots’ and ‘cold spots’ of social mobility across England.

APP Reach is designed to support hard working students who might not have family members with the relevant educational or career knowledge to guide them. If you’re ambitious and determined, but not sure how to get to where you want in terms of university and jobs, we can help. We want to give you the opportunities to show your potential no matter what your background is. Here at the SMF we are proud that the majority of our students go on to university and gain experiences and opportunities with us that help them gain employment in prestigious organisations.

Robert, a recent APP Reach student said: “My mentor was supportive and friendly and helped me to achieve greater confidence in my abilities and my future.”
